Upcoming Movies from DC World

With the mega success celebrated by the Infinity War, MCU has somehow managed to set up a benchmark which any other franchise is less likely to attain in near time. Their arch nemesis DCEU is certainly having a tough time to match up to the expectations of DC comic book fan base. They had a modest start with Snyder’s Man of Steel but were unable to maintain the spark with Dawn of Justice as it crashed miserably in box office and ratings. Wonder Woman, on the other hand, was successful in exploring the character of Princess Diana promising a hyped up sequel of Justice League, which again was a disaster in terms of character development. DCEU is yet to design the foundation laid by Iron Man for MCU. They even hired Joss Whedon, the one who is credited for the success of initial two phases of MCU, to co-write Justice League and direct reshoots but that wasn’t enough. However it is utilising its best resources to the full potential so that no stone remains unturned with their upcoming projects which is quite visible by the fresh trailers released by the Warner Bros Production.

Aquaman trailer seems quite innovative than any other regular DC movie. It reflect the vibes of Ragnarok and Black Panther in some ways but I hope it is more than that. As far as trailer tells, Aquaman plans to dethrone his brother Ocean Master (played by Patrick Wilson) to prevent his ambition of waging war on surface world. Casting Jason Momoa as the Aquaman is one of the finest decisions made by DCEU and they trusted the job of directing the movie with the Conjuring fame, James Wan. The movie also stars the likes of Amber Heard and Willem Dafoe. Though the trailers of Dawn of Justice and JL seemed awesome enough too to restore the faith of DC fans back, but that was only on the surface. Its trailer has everything one hopes from a superhero movie and is garnering positive reviews among fans. Aquaman will hit the screens on December 21, 2018 in US.

Shazam trailer was released on the same day as Aquaman by Warner Bros Entertainment and it made us clear that DCEU is gonna treat us with heavy meal. Shazam is nothing like any of the previous DC projects and it all seemed a light comedy with no glimpse of sky-scraper shattering VFX yet, but we all know that is bound to happen. Shazam (played by Zachary Levi), famous with the name of real Captain Marvel is fueled with magic and spells. The antagonist of the movie, Doctor Sivana played by Mark Strong, is not yet introduced but if the rumors are true, Dwayne The Rock Johnson is surprising us with the cameo of Black Adam. His entry in JL is gonna be a remarkable one when he teams up with Superman and Flash, keeping in mind his comic personality. Directed by David Sandberg known for directing the horror flicks like Annabelle Creation and Lights Out, Shazam is planned to be released on April 5, 2019.

Wonder Woman marked the decisive moment for DC movies as it is the only movie so far which went down well with critics and with box office, so stakes are quite high with this. The arch enemy of Diana, Cheetah is said to be in action against her. Also Chris Pine is reprising his role of Steve Trevor which is a complex mystery. Wonder Woman 1984 is still under production and is expected to be released around November 2019. Gal Gadot is all set to reprise her role of Princess Diana, with director Patty Jenkins returning on board.

The production status of Flashpoint is complex and remains delayed until date. Movie was supposed to start filming in early 2017. WB hired Rick Famuyiwa for the script job but his exit from the project over creation difference laid a further long road until Spiderman Homecoming’s co-writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein were hired by WB to finish the script. The studio hinted that story will be based upon the event from famous comic arc that involves Barry traveling in past to save his mother’s life, ending up screwing the timeline. Flashpoint is the bright chance for the studio to fix the previous unwanted knots. Release date is yet to be announced.
WB is all set to mine the DC universe for the time to come. The other projects that are still under consideration and under development by WB studios are –
1. Cyborg (2020)
2. Green Lantern Corps (2020)
3. Justice League Dark (TBD)
4. Joker origin movie (TBD)
5. Suicide Squad 2 (TBD)
6. Batgirl (TBD)
7. Nightwing (TBD)
8. Batman (TBD)
9. Man of Steel sequel (TBD)
10. New Gods (TBD)
DC characters contain whole lot of potential, especially their supervillains. They need to fix their issues with the script and way too much darker theme, so as to appeal to the wider audience.
