In the past 10 years, Marvel Studios under the leadership of Kevin Feige has become an unstoppable force that hit us with its greatest shot, i.e. Avengers: Infinity War. This is a movie that follows the stories of 18 other movies that belong to the same universe with over 60 lead characters. Above all that this movie had to introduce the main villain who they had been building since past 6 years.
The expectations of the fans from this movie were through the roof and had to follow one of the most successful superhero movies of all time, Black Panther. 10 years back, even a thought of having such movie would not cross our mind. Yet somehow against all odds, Avengers: Infinity War earned over 257 million dollars in the first three days of its release, surpassing the record of the force awakens by 10 million dollars. This movie had no right to be as successful or even as good as it was still it made more money worldwide in 3 days than justice league made in its complete run in the theatres.
But how was Marvel Studios able to pull this off? To me, the secret of Marvel’s success is in its journey. The company was on the brink of bankruptcy when it decided to take a chance with a 3rd-grade character, Iron Man in 2008. The movie gave us a not just a brilliant version of the character but also reintroduced the world to the amazing actor Robert Downey Jr. At the end of the movie, we see a small scene with Nick Fury played by Samuel L. Jackson introducing us to the words, the Avengers’ initiative. This movie set the stage for the origin of its other main characters including Captain America, Thor and the Hulk.
The studio touched its first milestone when it did the unthinkable and brought together characters from different movies into one big blockbuster called Avengers. This movie gave us a taste of what was to come in the future and we found it delicious.
Phase 1 of MCU
Phase 2 of the MCU was a filled with highs and lows. It gave us movies that were loved by all like; Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. There were movies that divided the fans like; Iron Man 3 and Avengers: Age of Ultron, and a movie that not many people were a fan of, Thor: The Dark World.
Phase 2 of MCU
The Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe started with a big bang. Captain America: Civil War showed us what the Russo Brothers were truly capable of. This movie is still regarded as one of the best Marvel movies. It introduced 2 new characters in the middle of a conflict between 2 of the older character, and it did it seamlessly. And it is at this time when the Russo Brothers were announced as the directors of Avengers Infinity war and Avengers 4 (the title is yet to be announced).
Phase 3 of MCU
Phase three was filled with heavy hitters. We saw the origin of Doctor Strange, the reintroduction of Spider-Man and the establishment of Black Panther as a Leader. We got awesome Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 and we saw Thor get a new haircut in his best move, Thor: Ragnarok. Ragnarok breathed a new life in the character of Thor, and gave us the chance to see the much-awaited planet hulk storyline on the big screen.
This 10 yearlong buildup played a key role in the success of Avengers: Infinity War. Because of all these movies, we did not have to spend almost any time building up the heroes for the audience, we already love these characters. This gave us a chance to get invested in the Villain, the Mad Titan, Thanos, who now is being ranked number one on the list of Marvel villains. Also, because of the fact that we know all the heroes so well, we straight away bought their interactions with each other.
But most, of the credit of this movie’s success, goes to the Russo Brothers, Anthony and Jay Russo, who directed this movie in such a masterful manner. Each and every scene moves the plot further. Every character interaction helps establish or set up something that will help the movie. Small amount of Marvel’s trademark humor is sprinkled all over the film even though the script is one of the darker scripts that Marvel has put out. And last but not the least, the action sequences in the movie are some of the most fantastic scenes I have seen in a feature film. There were scenes in the movie that seem like they were picked up directly from comic books and anime. Infinity war had me on the edge of my seat for the majority of its screen time.
The Russo Brothers
All of this was made possible by Kevin Feige and the Russo Brothers because of one simple reason; they are fans at their core. They understand each and every character they work on and treat them with love and companion. They pluck the essence of these characters from the comics and put them in the movies and it becomes evident in the movies that they have put out. The best example of that is Spider-Man. Even though Spider-Man had been played by two other actors on five different movies, they were able to bring him into the MCU as the best version of the character.
The success of any movie depends on several different factors like marketing, distribution, release date, etc., but before all of that, it needs to be a good movie with a good story and good direction, and Avengers: Infinity War is blessed by all these things.
