Avengers: Infinity War Opens New Windows Of Opportunities For The MCU

Avengers: Infinity War is set to make a total gross of over 2 billion dollars at the worldwide box office, making it the fourth movie ever to touch that mark. It is following juggernauts (wink wink) Avtar, Titanic and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Among the top 10 box office earners worldwide, Marvel Studios has its name on four of them including Avengers Infinity War, Black Panther, The Avengers, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. It clearly shows that Marvel movies are loved all around the globe and they are not stopping anytime soon.

It would be safe to say that Avengers: Infinity war was the most ‘Comic booky’ out of all the MCU movies that we have seen. It was clear how unapologetic it was for being so over the top and bizarre, and I mean it all in the best way possible. From the weird spells of Doctor Strange to the amazing suit of Tony Stark to the spider arms of Spiderman, this movie went all in and is certainly reaping the benefits of it.

The first time MCU attempted so go this weird route was with the introduction of the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. The movie introduces the world to a talking tree and a raccoon along with some of the least known characters in the Marvel comics’ history. James Gunn practically gave Marvel a whole new world that it is still reaping the benefits from. This movie paved the way for other lesser known and weird characters to make their place in the MCU.  Characters like Ant-Man and Doctor Strange could only get made because Guardians of the Galaxy was a huge success.

Avengers: Infinity War took that success to a whole new lever. It showed the studio that the audiences have an appetite for such movies that are not afraid to go the weird route. The huge box office collection of the movie gives its makes the freedom to push the boundaries of weird further and further along. Here are some of the absolutely bizarre and over the top characters/storylines that Marvel Studios should attempt in future:

  1. The Eternals

The simplest way to explain eternals to anyone is that they are the X-Men in the cosmic universe. As bizarre as it may sound it is the perfect direction for the MCU to go in in the Phase 4. These are characteristics with superhuman abilities that used to live on Titan, Thanos’ home planet. This movie can be a prequel, or a continuation that shows the eternal as the survivors of the destruction of Titan, as it was shown in Avengers: Infinity War. This could not only give us a whole new franchise of characters to follow, it may also give more depth to Thanos. The president of Marvel Studios recently announced that an Eternals movie might be in works and I could not be any more excited.

  1. Howard: The Duck

Back in 1986 marvel came out with a Howard the Duck movie. The movie is regarded as one of the worst movies of all time. But that was before comic book genre was even a thing. However in today’s time, when Marvel Studios is one of the, if not the biggest studio in the world, a Howard the Duck movie would be nothing short of awesome. The character is ripe to be rebooted and has already been featured in both of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. This could be one of the dark horse movies that if done right can become one of the most iconic comeback movies.

  1. Silver Surfer

The people who are the fans of comics would not agree but the character of Silver Surfer is one of the more obscure characters in the Marvel series of comics. He is a guy made of silver who rides a surfboard of the same material with cosmic powers and is hired by a celestial creature who wants to eat the worlds. It does not get any weirder than this, yet he is one of the more popular characters from the comics. He would be the perfect introduction to Galactus who can be the main antagonist of the next phase in the MCU because, after Thanos, there needs to be a villain who is a bigger threat to the world.

  1. Alternate Marvel Universe

In the movie Doctor Strange, the MCU played a little with the idea of multiple universes. What if after the end of Phase 3, MCU makes movies from the multiple universes. Marvel Comics have been known to do that on paper. Marvel Zombie Universe if one of the more popular ones. There is a whole spider-verse for them to explore and apply similar ideas to different franchises or the whole Avengers. They can go the Logan route and can give an alternate adult-rated version of the Iron Man character, or can even make Captain America evil. The sky is the limit when it comes to stories from the multi-verse.

  1. One-Offs

Every time we come across any of the Marvel characters in a movie there have always been high stakes involved, either world is in danger or someone is going to start a war or some other catastrophe, but what Marvel has not explored is the normal life of these characters that we so dearly love.  So it can come up with a whole new series of movies that connect to the MCU but show these characters in their daily lives as a drama or a romantic comedy. Some that I really want to see is Hawkeye’s adventure on a day off or a romantic comedy with  Scarlet Witch and Vision (if they come back).

Comic books are filled with bizarre ideas and not all can be adapted on the big screen, however, Avengers Infinity War proves that the audiences are not afraid the go out to watch something that has never been done before. So if there is a time for Marvel to take risks, it is now.
